There is always something new and exciting happening at NIROW. This year, our calendar includes a mix of fun, social events for the family, including personal and professional development seminars with lots of opportunities for community service and volunteer hours. Additional information about each event will be available closer to the date.

Youth Development

NIROW is committed to nurturing the potential of young newcomers through programs that inspire, educate, and empower. Our MyTT Summer Camp provides a safe, fun, and engaging environment where youth build confidence, life skills, and lasting friendships. Bookapedia encourages a love for reading and critical thinking, connecting young minds through storytelling and group discussion. Together, these programs help shape the next generation of confident, informed, and community-minded leaders.

MyTT Summer Camp

NIROW’s transformative youth development program designed to build emotional intelligence, resilience, and life skills among racialized youth aged 9 to 18. Rooted in trauma-informed practices and delivered through fun, interactive, and culturally responsive activities, the camp addresses the unique challenges faced by second-generation Canadians and newcomer youth.

Held over five days, MyTT creates a safe space where participants explore self-identity, develop self-confidence, and strengthen their social and emotional skills through collaborative learning and play.

Prioritizing youth from low-income and newcomer families, the camp supports those navigating the complexities of cultural identity, racial inequity, and socio-economic barriers.

Bookapedia

Bookapedia encourages a love for reading and critical thinking, connecting young minds through storytelling and group discussion.

The club focusing on books by racialized and Indigenous authors addresses the lack of representation of these voices in mainstream literature and media. By highlighting diverse perspectives, the club ensures that youth have access to stories that reflect their own experiences, which is often missing in traditional educational resources.

It promotes cultural awareness and understanding among youth by engaging them with diverse stories. This helps participants learn about different cultures, histories, and experiences, fostering empathy and reducing prejudice within the community.

Finally, by focusing on books by racialized and Indigenous authors, the club supports and uplifts marginalized voices, contributing to a more inclusive literary landscape. This effort helps improves the sense of belonging & social and educational inequities, fostering a more inclusive and understanding community in the Region of Waterloo.

NIROW acknowledges that the land on which we live and work is of the Haldimand Tract within the territory of the Neutral, Anishinaabe and Haudenosaunee people. We are thankful to the First Nations, Métis and Inuit people who care for these territories and those across the province.

We acknowledge that Indigenous peoples continue to endure inequality, violence, and oppression due to the history of colonialism and unfair power structures. This is magnifed by the historical and ongoing widespread failure by settlers and institutions to uphold their responsibilities within the Dish With One Spoon Covenant.

With our core value of integrity, and as beneficiaries of this land we stand in allyship with lndigenous peoples, committing to a responsibility to acknowledge and understand its history and the current experiences of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis peoples; ensuring that we do not perpetuate the harms of colonization.
