INDEFEST 2025 – A Celebration of Culture, Unity, and Excellence

The Nigerians in the Region of Waterloo (NIROW) hosted another unforgettable edition of INDEFEST, an annual celebration of Nigeria’s independence, culture, and community excellence. This year’s event drew over 500 attendees, including dignitaries, community leaders, and families from across Waterloo Region.

The evening began with a vibrant Green Carpet and 360 Booth experience, followed by cocktails and live music by Tolazee and DJ Philbaddest, setting an energetic tone for the night. The formal program opened with a video presentation, territorial acknowledgment, and national anthems of Nigeria and Canada, symbolizing the rich dual heritage of the community.

In her President’s Welcome Address, Fidelia Ukueje highlighted NIROW’s achievements in community empowerment, youth development, and cultural preservation. The Keynote Address, delivered by Mrs. Oluseun Olayinka, Executive Director of Adventure4Change, inspired attendees to continue fostering collaboration and resilience within immigrant communities.

The event showcased an array of cultural performances by Afrikan Peach, Abamararungu Rwandan Dance Troupe, and the Ubuntu Kids, blending African rhythms, storytelling, and dance. Spoken word artist Chloe Chris-Aluta also delivered a powerful performance that resonated deeply with the audience.

A highlight of the evening was the NIROW Community Awards, recognizing outstanding individuals and organizations for their leadership, allyship, and community impact, including:

  • ACAWRA, Adventure4Change, and Run4Office for their dedication to empowering African and Black communities.
  • Expedier and Waverlite for excellence in corporate social responsibility.
  • Dr. Atinuke and Alex Adefemi for leadership in community building.
  • Christian Emoabino and Kate Ndupu as Volunteers of the Year.
  • Hephzibah and Hendricks Nzette for Youth Excellence.
  • Special Recognition Awards were also presented to Councillor Colleen James, MP Mike Morrice, and Maritza Yawching-Robertson for their continued service and responsiveness to the Nigerian community.

The night concluded with a fundraising appeal, closing remarks by Vice President Ugo Chris-Aluta, and an electrifying afterparty headlined by world-renowned Nigerian artist 9ice, whose performance brought the audience to their feet in celebration.

INDEFEST 2025 reaffirmed NIROW’s commitment to unity, cultural pride, and community empowerment, leaving attendees inspired, connected, and proud of their shared heritage.
